Smart Traffic Lights Program
Roads and Maritime Services | February 2019
About the Program
The NSW Government is investing to revolutionise our traffic light technology system.
Upgrades to the Sydney Coordinated Adaptive Traffic System (SCATS), NSW system for coordinating traffic lights will ensure NSW continues to lead the world in busting congestion.
New Technology
The upgrade includes the installation of latest sensor technology at 500 intersections across NSW.
Sensors such as camera’s and radar will be installed to better detect traffic conditions in real time and to keep motorists moving.
The new sensor technology can capture richer contextual traffic information including traffic queuing enabling SCATS to better adapt signal phasing to local traffic conditions.
In the future the sensors will also be used for incident detection at intersections to improve emergency response and incident clearance times.
In addition to new technology at the roadside SCATS will be migrated to a platform product with AI capability to support new functionality and ensure NSW has the necessary infrastructure to support the introduction of connected and automated vehicles and mobility as a service (MaaS) in the future.
